Sorry if I was unclear. The grey and the red squirrels are all strict PN. Not being a squirrel expert, I always thought that it was just genetic variation, like some humans are redheads and some are blonds or brunettes. But now given the information from Justy I am wondering if they are separate varieties. BTW Justy who is responsible for introducing grey squirrels into the UK? I hope whoever did that is sent to gaol and not just given a PN sentence. I have a feeling that they are a lot of people in the UK who are secret naturists and wouldn’t really mind a PN sentence.

One of the worst offenders at spreading grey squirrels was the 11th Duke of Bedford, Sir Herbrand Russell, who released and gifted many grey squirrels around the UK as an ornamental species from his home at Woburn Park. Reds and greys are separate species and the UK greys carry a disease that kills reds.

For some reason when I read “gaol” I can’t help but picture a dungeon rather than a modern jail/prison.
I have both grey and red squirrels running around my yard. More of the grey type than red. The red are cuter. They’re all strict PN.
