  1. I think the protagonist here really wants to go naked but doesn’t want to come out and say so in case people think she’s weird. Far easier to use the old “I’m naked but it’s not really my fault” tactic.

  2. This religion is jainism and only their male ascets go fully naked at all times. They are called “digambara jains”, which means “sky clad” jains. There is another branch of jainism, whose ascets are called “shvetambara” because they ar just “clad in white” and this is far less spectacular.
Jainism was more common during antique times. It is older than the present forms of hinduism.
I tell this from my personnal knowledge about religions, but I am neighther hindu nor jain, but christian !

    • Jainism is not older than Hinduism. It was founded by Mahavira Jaina around the time Buddhism was founded: around 2000 years ago. Both shared the same goal – to remove the evils of contemporary Hinduism, such as the caste system; to gain knowledge; and to maintain peace. The approach they took was different – Buddhism took the ‘middle path’ and Jainism went with the extreme. Some Jains reject all forms of worldly possessions, while some keep it minimal. They emphasize on not harming other creatures and are very strict with it – to the point that they do not eat root vegetables. The main attraction of Jainism is the latter part. Jainism is still followed today: their population is higher than it was in ancient times. Shvetambara is more common than Digambara, but I do not agree with your opinion that it is less spectacular. And Hinduism still follows the basic principles that have been ingrained in it for upwards of four millennia – the Vedas. And These religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, etc. aren’t one -ism – reminiscent of Abrahamic faiths – like most people perceive them to be. They have great diversity among themselves. Like Hinduism – there’s Dravidian Hinduism, there’s Vedic Hinduism, there’s atheistic, monotheistic, polytheistic, and various other forms of it. At last, I would like to mention that all this is a massive simplification. All religions feature this kind of variety, including the aforementioned ones. Over.

      • I think it helps that they’re based in a hot country. You don’t see many Jainist monks above the Arctic circle.

**Edit. Following Dienw’s reply below. Thanks for the information. I stand corrected and withdraw the above remark

        • First of all, the correct term is ‘Jain’ and not ‘Jainist’. Second, you are going to be surprised by Himalayan monks. These Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain monks meditate and do breathing exercises at negative temperatures in the Himalayan mountains. This is to avoid distractions. Some also meditate in quiet forests.

  3. Her friend wasn’t lying, though. There IS a religion that requires one to be nude at ALL TIMES and it’s very much in practice in India today.

I was talking about Digambara. Though only male monks can be nude, so she’s still not being traditional in that sense.
