4 Replies to “Bikini Confusion”

  1. I read years ago (only one source, and I don’t remember that) that the native inspiration for the bikini actually didn’t have a top, and when it was introduced “there were many happy male photographers.”

  2. Indeed, this is not called a bikini but a “monokini” (at least in France), because made of one part and not two !

    • Elsewhere the monokini has evolved from that to be something which actually covers the nipples, bottom and “lady bits” but is far skimpier and more revealing than a traditional one piece swimsuit. Either way, she’s done it “accidentally on purpose” to enjoy top freedom.

    • According to Wikipedia the original monokini was a little bit more modest, and had straps for some reason, although it was indeed topless all the same.

Also an interesting linguistic fact, although bikini → monokini seems logical, it’s kind of a back-formation, because kini doesn’t mean swimsuit or anything. Bikinis were actually named after Bikini Atoll, a nuclear test site, of all things. (And presumed home of Spongebob Squarepants)
