  1. The original dimensions of this GIF were 293 x 449. But it seems to have been enlarged to 586 x 898. It would have been better to preserve the exact original dimensions, but only to increase the frame where it is applied and stretched. This would not increase its size in any byte and reach the same final visual effect.

In addition, the idea of using mp4 or webm formats is very good. But it depends on the capacity of the blog’s technical environment to support these formats.

    • Unfortunately, Jetpack (a very popular WordPress optimization plug-in) did that automatically. I resized the image exactly like you suggested, and Jetpack was crazy enough to actually upscale the file. I may try and find a way around that when I have some free time to tinker, but for now I think we’re stuck with smaller gifs.

Video isn’t out of the question I guess, but even “in 2021”, as the other comment put it, compatibility across browsers leaves something to be desired.

      • NWO WM, thank you for the information!
I’m sorry I didn’t know about Jetpack for WordPress and so I can’t make another suggestion.
With larger or smaller GIFs, the NWO blog remains tasty and fun!
        Please, keep the good work!

  2. I did an experiment on this one, at the contributor’s suggestion. To keep file size reasonable, gifs must be smaller than still images, but on this one I’m displaying at 2x zoom.

What do you think? How do you like the result compared to the last one?

    • There is a much better way to keep file size reasonable. GIFs are definitely not the best choice for storing video in 2021. A preferable option is to convert an animated gif to mp4 or webm using ffmpeg tool or online service, such as cloudconvert.com, and then use tag with “autoplay loop muted playsinline” attributes for the same effect. E.g. 8.5 Mb gif in this post shrinks only to 1.1 Mb mp4 file.

      • Wait, WTF? It’s not not a 8.5 MB file… or it wasn’t originally. That means Jetpack is actually deoptimizing it when I try to display it larger. I guess that pretty much nixes this approach.
