7 Replies to “Laser Depilated”

  1. Technically, «depilation» means temporary removal of hair to the level of the skin. Shaving is actually a method of depilation.
In contrast, «epilation» is the removal of the entire hair from below the skin’s surface, right from the root. Therefore, the right term is laser epilation.

    • Where exactly did you get these definitions?

Perhaps this is true in some specialized technical jargon, but not in normal everyday use.

The OED defines ‘depilation’ as “The action of depriving or stripping of hair; the condition of being void of hair” and ‘epilation’ as “The action of pulling out or eradicating hair.” Neither makes any distinction of permanent versus temporary removal.

Dictionary.com defines ‘depilate’ as “To remove hair from the body” or “(tr) to remove the hair from”. The entry for ‘depilation’ reads simply: “depilation [ dĕp′ə-lā′shən ] n. : epilation”. It also gives the definition: “to remove the hair from (hides, skin, etc.).” I am unclear on how one would temporarily remove the hair from a hide.

Dictionary.com also gives this definition: “epilation [ ĕp′ə-lā′shən ] n. The act or result of removing hair, as by mechanical or chemical means.: depilation.”

Neither source indicates the distinction you specify, and in fact dictionary.com treats them as exact synonyms.

  2. That definitely sounds like an invitation to touch her beautiful body. Would be rude not to touch it…
