Opinions on age in drawn content

So a couple days ago I posted a submission that proved controversial. Although the caption implies the girl in the drawing is a college graduate, I’d have to agree she looks very much younger. (The image in question) I haven’t got that many #art submissions until fairly recently so I don’t really have a policy about it. (For photos of real people, they do of course have to be 18+, please let me know if you see any you have reason to think are not.) But I guess time has come that I need to think about how do handle this for drawings. The tricky part is that defining the age of a fictional character can be very hard, especially since the anime art style most of these are in tends to make everyone look pretty young.

I was tempted to try to make a poll about what people would personally consider too-young-looking but I realized it’s a bit too complicated a question for a simple multiple choice poll. If you have any thoughts on that, feel free to share them in the comments, but for the moment I’m going to focus on the easier part (even though that’s kind of backwards):

Poll: How should drawings of young looking characters handled?

  1. I feel that if it is just nudity (standing, sitting with legs together) then it shouldn’t be a problem. However, if it is in a sexual pose (bent over, legs spread) then it should be hidden with the warning.

  2. This is a very thorny problem. So long as the Permanude universe allows children to be stripped for punishment, we have a potential problem. As I said before, NWO always skates by showing older women as the school kid.

Now, however, we’re looking at Anime. There are very few old people in Anime. They are almost all young looking. I’ve seen a few that were very young looking. Some good points have been made that the world wide web is WORLD wide and different countries have different definitions for child ponography. Not perving on small children myself, or even young teenagers, I feel very unqualified to have an opinion since I love Anime for what it is.

All that beating around the bush accepted, I’m afraid that I have to agree with the more conservitice posts here. I don’t know if putting it behind a warning cover is good enough for Europe, but I’d hate to see this page dragged through the mud.

Yes, I’m suggesting we self censor. I hate self censorship. However, as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, if I want to publish PN stories, I have to identify the people as eighteen or above within the first two pages or so. That’s just the world we live in.

Good luck in making a call, NWO. I know it’s a bitch to have to.

    • I, personally, do not have a problem with naked children. I have seen nudist families with infants and single-digit age children acting and playing as if dressed. If a child grows up around nudity, they will act better than an adult with no experience with nudity. I do have a problem with child nudity if someone makes it sexual. I don’t believe nude children are the same as child porn. Because nudism is NOT about sex… it’s about the desire not to wear clothes.

  3. By law here even cartoon depictions of minors count as child pornography if they can be considered in the broadest sense “sexual content”.
That’s the same in more than a few countries, especially in Europe.

In fact some countries go so far as to consider any depiction of a minor, photorealistic or not, to be considered child porn if according to a court “it could be arousing to a pedophile”, which in the UK for example has led to people being arrested for taking photos of their own children during school sporting events because someone considered that the shorts and t-shirts could be enough to make the photos of interest to a pedophile (afaik no convictions came from that, but the stage is set).

  4. I’ve voted for hidden, because of the difficulty of saying exactly how young-looking is too young-looking. I also don’t want things things to get too difficult for the creators. There are still limits, though, and I really think the linked picture goes beyond those limits. The warning seems like the best compromise.

  5. Despite what I voted on the pole, If enough people are against it, then I completely support a new tag that people can toggle the visibility of, or whatever…
cause hidden is better than completely banned.
Also, It is worth noting that no one said anything about this:

and essentially the only difference is the chest!

    • That’s almost always the reason. Every time I’ve seen or posted a picture in any of the other groups I’m in (I personally happen to prefer smaller breasts and think that anything over C is too big) it’s the breast size that starts it. I actually saw one guy one time say that all women have big breasts when they are adults and that only children have small breasts.

It’s almost a mentality that breast size directly equates to age.

But as far as my knowledge of laws goes, if the drawing depicts a real, existing person that is a minor, then its illegal. But if it’s a drawing of a fictional character, its classified as art instead of pornagraphy.

      • It’s probably fair to say that breast size is the only obvious indicator of age available.
The presence of pubic hair would make an argument, but it’s usually missing (presumed shaved).
Any other indicator of age that I can think of could be considered an imperfection and thus be left out.

If I’m wrong, so be it… but then again artists aren’t always the greatest at depicting correct physiology, so I’m not sure how good a non-obvious answer is (seeing as the artist would also need to know that answer).
