I’ll be traveling with limited internet access over the weekend, so updates will be sparse. Won’t leave the front page totally idle though.

All of a sudden I notice that the default avatars (the colored geometric patterns) next to comments are broken. It seems that manually uploaded avatars (like mine for instance) are working, but most/all of the default ones are broken right now. (You guys see it too, right? It’s not just me is it?)

I’m concerned it may be caused by the comment editing plug-in, because it does touch on a related part of wordpress and it’s one of the last things I changed before this started. So anyway, comment editing is disabled for the moment. I certainly hope to have it back soon, but for diagnostic purposes at least I’ve gotta see if turning that off makes a difference.

Edit: It doesn’t seem like disabling the comment edit plug-in helped, so that’s turned back on.

I made another attempt to find a plugin that would let people edit or delete their comments… and I finally found one!

It does have some limitations though (because they’re trying to sell a “pro” subscription version which costs more than I can justify). The big limitation is that it only works for logged-in users, so this might be the first really good reason to make an account. It also forces a time limit, which I set for a generous 48 hours.

Anyways, this is still experimental, but I hope this will prove useful. Please let me know if you encounter any problems with it. And as before, if you’re not logged in, you can just reply to yourself and ask me to fix it. (e.g. “Replied in wrong place, please delete.” or “Oops, baked->naked.”) and I’ll correct it and remove the extra comment.

In case you wanna test it out, I suppose the comments on this post would be the place to do it. Please delete any test comments once they’ve served their purpose.

I was just alerted to a very weird error with the captcha plugin. Apparently it breaks if you use any emoji in your message.

You can use old-school emoticons like :) and some of these even get converted to images, but actual emoji trip it up somehow. Quite strange. It doesn’t seem to have a problem with other Unicode characters like Chinese… it just hates emoji I guess.

Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience, but I doubt I can fix it short of finding a whole new captcha plug-in so please just refrain from using emoji in comments for now.

So you probably know I finally got back into my Discord account recently. Well shortly after that, I noticed my server passed a noteworthy milestone: 1000 members! (1001 right at this moment). Unfortunately, over half are accounts that haven’t actually been on in quite a while, and I’ve been thinking I ought to use Discord’s “prune” feature to remove some of these apparently abandoned accounts.

No need to worry though, no one will be banned or anything. You if you’re on a Discord hiatus but want to rejoin the server later you can always do so from this page. Or just stop by quickly any time before this coming weekend to make sure you account is marked active. Accounts that have a role, including the just-for-fun clothing status roles, are also safe.

I don’t expect this news to be that exciting, but I got a new phone which somehow proves I’m a real person in the eyes of the bots who run Discord.

Exciting news. I just moved to Japan! I’ve always been a bit of weeb, so this is a a dream come true. When my employer offered me a long term contract in their Fukushima decontamination division it was too good to pass up. Obviously I’ll be busy settling in, so please excuse me if the blog is a little less active for a while. Also, I know this may be disappointing to some, but I do of course have to comply with local indecency laws, so from now on (or as long as I’m living here anyway) I’ll have to apply pixelation to the images. I hope you understand.

Oops. I just noticed no one had made any comments for a couple days… they were broken, weren’t they? I think a wordpress update must have broken the captcha plugin. I’m not sure if it will be possible to get that working again, that plugin hasn’t been updated in four years. So I might need to find a replacement when I have more time. For now, captchas are disabled. I hope this doesn’t let too much spam in.
