Here’s the story on the maintenance. I’ve successfully dealt with a couple things, but I’ve made little headway on the biggest issue, which is that my blog is once again outgrowing it’s hosting package, specifically regarding its drive space allowance. It’s not critical yet, but I see where the trajectory is going. Compounding the issue is that my host recently (and suddenly) raised prices and made some other changes for the worse. Previously when I would contact support I felt like I was dealing with competent people who actually wanted to help, now I feel like I’m getting the brush off. In short, I’m looking to switch hosts again. I’ve done it once before and it went pretty well, but it’s certainly a little daunting. For better or worse I already paid my current host for 3 months just recently so there’s not much time pressure.
So, here’s the question: Should I press on with this now, leaving the blog on pause (perhaps into early next year despite what I said earlier), or resume normal operation for now, and tackle this again in a month or two?

if you’ve already paid for three months of hosting in advance, there’s really no reason not to keep posting stuff, if you still have enough storage space. however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep searching for alternatives to move to when that three months is up
That’s pretty much what I was going to say. Look around for better options, but don’t rush anything. Keep doing what you are doing here in the meantime but keep your eyes and ears open for better opportunities in the near future.
I should add that I’ve already found what looks like a decent alternative. It’s called Hostinger, and I’d be going for one of their “business” or “cloud” plans, as opposed to “VPS” which in their terminology seems to me “here’s a visualized operating system, you handle the rest”. (Confusingly my current hosting is called cloud vps, so apparently these terms aren’t very consistent.)
Still, more time to consider options isn’t a bad thing. I suppose I could do some further shopping around. I do not however want to leave it until the 3 months are actually up, I’ll feel much more comfortable getting started with at least a couple weeks to spare in case it doesn’t go completely smoothly.
Lastly, just to be clear, I’ll need to pause the blog again while that happens, (hopefully for just a day or two). This is just because there might be a time when the old blog has been copied but isn’t yet live on the new host, so anything posted during that time wouldn’t be saved.
