All of a sudden I notice that the default avatars (the colored geometric patterns) next to comments are broken. It seems that manually uploaded avatars (like mine for instance) are working, but most/all of the default ones are broken right now. (You guys see it too, right? It’s not just me is it?)
I’m concerned it may be caused by the comment editing plug-in, because it does touch on a related part of wordpress and it’s one of the last things I changed before this started. So anyway, comment editing is disabled for the moment. I certainly hope to have it back soon, but for diagnostic purposes at least I’ve gotta see if turning that off makes a difference.
Edit: It doesn’t seem like disabling the comment edit plug-in helped, so that’s turned back on.

there you have it. Those too lazy to enter a fake email address get a blank avatar. Place any fake email address into the box, and you get your randomized avatar.
Maybe it is just newly generated ones? I see quite a few good ones as well. My Gravatar one seems to work as well.
After having experimented a little further, it actually seems to be the default avatar for users who don’t enter an email address that’s missing. I recall it used to be turquoise and white.
So in a way that’s the least serious problem, but depending on how your browser renders broken images it can still be pretty ugly.
Anyone happen to know another wordpress blog that lets you comment without an email address? I’d be curious to know if theirs are working properly.
default here
If you enter an email address, even without setting a custom image it does seem to work, but it used to be if you entered no email you’d still get this type of image (always the same one).
no email
invalid email, no @
just an @
Can confirm that I see it too 🙂
