There’s a line in the historical novel The King Must Die by Mary Renault stating that in ancient Greek society “breasts were worn outside the dress” but whether the author has based this on solid research or wishful thinking is unclear.
It was not the case for classical ancient Greek civilization like Athens, but it was totally accurate for the earlier Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. Thank you for that. It makes sense as the book tells the story of Theseus, the Athenian prince who travelled to Crete to kill the Minotaur, so the description would have applied to Minoan women not Greek and I’ve conflated the two cultures.
