Moving Forward

I’m now starting in earnest on transferring the blog to a new host. Anything posted after this (including comments) will most likely not be carried over. But if all goes well it might be completed in a day or so. If the process drags I might do limited updates here, but we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll be back to normal pretty quick.

Need some opinions

Here’s the story on the maintenance. I’ve successfully dealt with a couple things, but I’ve made little headway on the biggest issue, which is that my blog is once again outgrowing it’s hosting package, specifically regarding its drive space allowance. It’s not critical yet, but I see where the trajectory is going. Compounding the issue is that my host recently (and suddenly) raised prices and made some other changes for the worse. Previously when I would contact support I felt like I was dealing with competent people who actually wanted to help, now I feel like I’m getting the brush off. In short, I’m looking to switch hosts again. I’ve done it once before and it went pretty well, but it’s certainly a little daunting. For better or worse I already paid my current host for 3 months just recently so there’s not much time pressure.

So, here’s the question: Should I press on with this now, leaving the blog on pause (perhaps into early next year despite what I said earlier), or resume normal operation for now, and tackle this again in a month or two?

Maintenance

Hey guys, now that the holidays are mostly behind us, I’m gonna work on some maintenance I’ve been putting off. The blog won’t be offline (at least not for any extended period), but for a mix of technical and time/energy reasons, I’m going to pause new posts for a bit while I work on some things. I expect we’ll be back to normal by the end of the year at the latest.

Update: There’s more work to be done still. But since I planned to share these video clips on a weekly basis, I’m gonna go ahead and post one of those.

Comments are… Working?

So, this morning I noticed comments had stopped working. I submitted a support ticket, but ironically it magically resolved itself before they could do anything.

So who knows what’s going on now. But at the moment it does appear to be working again.

Edit: Okay, I’m gonna unpin this shortly since it seems the problem went away, however mysteriously. Let me know if you run into issues making comments again. (Using the contact form, email or discord, since obviously you can’t make a comment about it…)

Lesbians!

Did you know there are lesbians in these captions? Shocking, right? Maybe not, but they never had a tag before, and now they do, thanks to the hard work of a Discord user.

Going forward I’ll try and apply the tag to new posts that fit (feel free to remind me if I miss some).

April Fools, Captcha still sucks

Working on fixing some captcha problems. There are a few issues, them being needlessly case-sensitive, the fact that I have to use two different captchas in different places etc. Currently looking at a minor issue related to dark mode.

Alright, I think that one was a little too subtle, the joke was that the captcha has broken so the words spilled out or something… but I’m not sure everyone could see it. Anyways, it’s still on my radar to actually improve but I haven’t found a good solution yet. Well, there’s one change I can make right now, I’ve switched the comment captcha from letters to numbers so you won’t need to worry about capitalization.

New Feature for Submissions

Got a Christmas caption? Now would be the time. And to help improve the chances it actually gets used this year I’ve added a new feature.

The submission forms now have a “Holiday” checkbox. If everything works like it should, these will be flagged for my attention in my inbox. Using it for other time-sensitive captions—like those about I donno, elections, or major sporting events—is fine, but please don’t use it without a legit reason.

New Captcha

WordPress has surprisingly few good options for captcha plugins. There’s the Google one of course, there’s any number that come as part of some complex security suite, there’s the old one that stopped working on the comment form, there’s one that forces visitors to mine crypto… But good options? Not really (unless you like Google, I guess).

So, getting to the point, the solution I settled on is, I admit, more of a “least bad” kind of thing. The old captcha with the funny phrases (nude boobs, etc.) will stick around for the contact form, login etc. And comments get an ugly little three letter code. If you have a long, thoughtful comment to share, I recommend copying it to your clipboard in case something goes wrong, because going back from the error page seems to reset the form. (Believe me, if I knew how to fix that I would.) Logged in users are still exempt though, so that’s one bright spot.
